The Tomb Raider is a 2018 American action movie directed by Roar Uthang, and written by Geneva Robertson Dworet and Allister Siddons. This is not the first tomb raider movie. There have been two tomb raider movies previously. And they include Tomb Raiders and Tomb Raiders the Cradle of Life released in 2001 and 2003 respectively.
The 2018 version of the tomb raider movie is based on the 2013 video game of the same name though it is a reboot of the tomb raider movie series. GK Films first acquired the film rights in 2011. Filming and principal photography on the film began on January 23rd in the United Kingdom. And cape Town South Africa ended on June 9, 2017, at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden.
Tomb Raider movie is about Lara Croft who is a fiercely independent lady. She decided to look into the disappearance of her father after she found a recorded message from Richard her father detailing his research into Himiko, the mythical queen of Yamatai who was said to command the power over life and death.
According to the myth Himiko was capable of killing people simply by touching them. A day came when her generals chained her up and sent her to a remote island to be buried alive so that she could no longer harm anyone. On the tape, Lara is advised by Richard her father to destroy all of his research but Lara opted to investigate further.
Tomb Raider 2018 Storyline
Her investigations take her to Hong Kong where she met Lu Ren, captain of the ship Endurance. Who is mourning his father’s death and who has once taken Richard on his ship to the island believed to be Yamatai. Lara soon bribes Lu Ren to take her to the island. Also, the ship capsizes in a violent storm and Lara is washed ashore and unconscious.
She is later revived and captured by Vogel the leader of a shadowy expenditure to locate Himiko’s tomb and seek to harness and weaponized Himiko’s power. Lara later escapes with the help of Lu Ren who also survived the storm. She was seriously wounded in the process and passed out from her injuries.
Meanwhile, Lara later regains consciousness after nightfall. She follows a mysterious figure wandering the island and later found out that the figure is her father who has been held captive on Yamatai. Richard tended to her wounds after he was convinced that it was his daughter Lara. Despite his protests, Lara sets off to recover his research from Vogel’s camp with the help of Lu Ren and the fishermen. In the ensuing chaos, Richard was captured by Vogel who persuades Lara to open the tomb of Himiko.
Tomb Raider Full Story
On getting to the tomb a series of booby traps were set off. Two Trinity soldiers were affected by Himiko’s power over death in an attempt to remove her corpse from her sarcophagus. It actually turns out that Himiko was not a witch who tried to kill people according to myth. But rather a carrier of such deadly disease that was spread by touch. She chose to be buried alive in order to save her people from certain death. Out of shock and fear the infected soldiers were shot dead by Vogel.
Vogel later detached Himiko’s fingers and placed them in his pocket after concluding not to move the corpse. In an ensuing ruckus, Lara and Richard overpower the remaining soldiers. Vogel escapes and Richard is infected. Knowing that there is no cure Richard destroys the tomb. And himself to prevent the virus from spreading across the world. Lara confronts Vogel in a fierce fight defeating him and shoving Himiko’s finger down his throat. Just as the infection takes over Lara is rescued by Lu Ren and the fishermen who escape Yamatai in a trinity helicopter.
Lara finally returns to London to accept her inheritance. She also discovers that Trinity’s front company is actually owned by Croft Holdings. With further investigations, she suspects Ana Miller is one of their agents who manipulated her into accepting her inheritance in order to have Lara sign over control of croft holdings’ business operations to her. Having witnessed Trinity’s ruthlessness firsthand, she prepares for her next adventure to thwart their sinister plans.
